The parathyroid glands are located in the neck closely related to the thyroid gland. There are in total four glands.

An overactive gland results in excessive parathyroid hormone (PTH) production. This can be easily diagnosed on a blood test and its resultant manifestation of hypercalcemia can result in symptoms of bone weakening, kidney stones, abdominal pain, constipation and psychiatric disturbance.

Very often, your endocrinologists would guide you through the process of investigation using Neck Ultrasound, 4D computed tomography scan of the neck and Nuclear Medicine Parathyroid Scan.

The decision on the approach to parathyroidectomy either using the minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) or four gland exploration will largely be determine if there is imaging confirmation of localised disease.
